The raven’s black plumage has a story behind it, which Ovid, following the Callimachean Hecale, retells in met. 2, 531-632 weaving it with the crow’s vicissitudes, initially Athena’s/Minerva’s loyal servant. The combination of the respective ornithological denominations and the names of the mythical characters recalled by the two volucres loquentes reveals all the erudition showed off by the poet in writing this literary piece. Following the pattern of the talking birds, Ovid endows both the raven and the crow with human language. The latter tries to exhort the former not to tell Apollo the truth about Coronis’ infidelity. A large part of the natural formations that occupied the surface of Sicily have disappeared because of heavy transformations beginning from the ancient time. These transformations have provoked the disappearance of entire communities plants and animals but the entity of these modifications can be only partially appreciated or assumed on the base of fragmentary data. Dal 17 febbraio ai primi giorni di marzo 2008 è stata registrata una morìa di centinaia di Carpe (Cyprinus carpio) nel Lago di Pergusa, in coincidenza di un’anomala colorazione giallastra delle acque ascrivibile ad un intenso bloom dell’aptofita ittiotossica Prymnesium parvum. La microalga manifesta comunemente bloom e tossicità in acque eutrofiche poco profonde, con salinità comprese fra 1 e 12 PSU. Il bloom tossico nel Lago Pergusa, per quanto determinato dalla complessa interazione di numerosi fattori ambientali, è essenzialmente connesso alle mutate condizioni di salinità del corpo idrico negli ultimi 5 anni (da >20 PSU a <5 PSU).
